A practical guide to website development
The art of website development.
After more than ten years developing web sites, I believe it is time to pass on some of the webmaster secrets I have learned along the way. While there are a few very nice tutorials on the more technical side of web site development, on such topics as HTML and its companion CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), I have never found a good single source on all the different aspects of web site development that a succesful webmaster needs to know. Hence, this practical guide to website development. It will be written for a non-technical audience, with links to more technical webmaster guides if necessary.
I am not a webmaster who believes in putting lots of effort in designing beautiful looking web sites. Or to be honest, I believe I am not good at designing beautiful web sites, but I have no indication that this lack of skill ever influenced the success of my web sites. However, for this webmasterguides website I made an exception. I adapted a nice free website template from Andreas Viklund just a little bit (to improve it search engine optimization).
I am also a very messy web site designer. I hardly ever check whether the HTML of my web sites is valid, and I am sure you can find some spelling errors now and then. Again, I have never felt that this held me back. I do believe in efficient web sites with lots of good content, but I have been successful with web sites that were average in those aspects as well. All you need is patience and some of the right knowledge. I hope I can convey in this Webmaster Guides web site how you can become a successful webmaster as well. And I hope you enjoy your stay on this web site and find the information you are looking for. If not, please give me your feedback.
If you are new to web site development, it will be worth while to start with our Beginners Guide. We are still developing this beginners guide and the whole web site is less than a year old, but it should at least clarify some of the basics of what a web site is and why you need web hosting.
